How long certified mail takes
Typical delivery times from when you send a letter, why the expected date can change, and how to plan for a deadline.
Last updated October 24, 2026
Most letters are delivered about 6 business days after you send them. About 4 in 5 arrive within 10 business days.
These numbers come from the letters our customers sent between April and October 2026. They're typical times, not a guarantee. USPS doesn't guarantee delivery dates for Certified Mail.
Where the time goes
| Stage | Typical time |
|---|---|
| We print your letter and hand it to USPS | About 3 business days |
| USPS delivers it | About 3 business days, sometimes longer |
Certified Mail travels by First-Class Mail. Adding Certified Mail gives you tracking and a signature at delivery, but it doesn't make the letter faster.
Some letters take longer, for example when:
- No one is available to sign. USPS leaves a notice, and the recipient picks the letter up at the post office. This can add a week or more. See When a letter isn't delivered.
- The letter is going far away, or to a rural area.
- There's a holiday, bad weather, or a USPS delay. USPS doesn't deliver letters on Sundays or federal holidays.
The expected delivery date is an estimate
Each letter shows an Expected Delivery date on your Letters page. It's an estimate made when you send the letter. Most letters arrive on or before it, but about a third arrive later.
Sending for a deadline
If your letter must arrive by a certain date:
- Send it at least two weeks early when you can.
- Plan around the delivery date, not the send date, if the deadline depends on the recipient receiving it.
- If the deadline is close, contact us before you send.
